Fw: OIS UPDATE: NEW H1B1 PACKET and PROCESSING TIMES

IMPORTANT NOTICE -  READ ENTIRE MESSAGE CAREFULLY AND DISTRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM THIS INFORMATION.

NEW H1B1 PACKET
Attention all faculty and staff who complete any portion of the H1B1 packet for nonimmigrants at JHMI:  Available on the OIS website is the most recent version of the H1B1 packet [revised 5/12/2004]. The OIS will continue to accept prior versions of the H1B1 packet until 6/30/2004, however EFFECTIVE 7/1/2004 any H1B1 application submitted to the OIS using any version other than the most recent version WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Please forward this e-mail and the attached H1B1 packet to all faculty and staff in your department who work with H1B1 processing.

PROCESSING TIMES
The OIS must remind ALL faculty and staff of visa processing times for H1B1, O-1, J-1, F-1 and Permanent Resident Visa applications. These processing times are not recommendations, they are calculated in relation to processing times at U.S. Consulates, the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Service and the Department of Labor. The OIS cannot expedite the processing of applications, so please plan accordingly if you wish to sponsor a nonimmigrant student, fellow, staff or faculty member.

(1) For incoming F-1 students or J-1 exchange visitors (a.k.a. J-1 students, J-1 Short Term Scholars, J-1 Research Scholars, J-1 Visiting faculty, etc.): Complete paperwork must be submitted 90 days in advance of the anticipated start date. ** Note: The OIS will no longer accept applications with June/July start dates ** [ECFMG sponsorship excepted]

(2) For extending F-1 students or J-1 exchange visitors (a.k.a. J-1 students, J-1 Short Term Scholars, J-1 Research Scholars, J-1 Visiting faculty, etc.): Complete paperwork must be submitted at least 90 days prior to the anticipated state date of the extension.

(3) For initial H1B1 applications and H1B1 extensions: Paperwork (i.e. prevailing wage request form and departmental declaration) must be submitted to the OIS 6 months prior to the anticipated start date. This time frame applies even if the department or beneficiary wishes to pay for premium processing (although those cases will ultimately take less time due to U.S. CIS premium processing).

(4) For O-1 and Permanent Residency sponsorship: Complete applications must be made no less than 8 months before the expiration of the beneficiary's current visa status. NOTE: New O-1, HHS waiver, and permanent residency cases cannot be expedited.

All other change of status applications must be submitted 90 days prior to the anticipated start date.
